Senator Omo-Agege Responds To The 90 Days Suspension Placed On Him By The Senate

The Senate has suspended the Senator representing Delta State, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege for 90 days instead of the previously recommended 181 legislative days. The Senator was suspended over his comment on the amendment of the Electoral Act 2010 to reorder sequence of polls in a general election.
The Senator claimed that the amendment was carried out in favour of President Buhari. The suspension was conveyed to him by the leadership of the Nigerian Senate.
A petition was written against Senator Omo-Agege by Senator Dino Melaye to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Relations. The petItion was investigated and the Senator was found guilty even after his apology to the committee. A 181 legislative days (one year) suspension was immediately recommended. However, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki pleaded for the reduction in the suspension days on behalf of the Senator.
The Senate has also decided that the case Senator Omo-Agege instituted against the chamber should be withdrawn from court immediately and that the Pro-Buhari Parliamentary Support Group be dissolved.

Reacting to the news of the suspension via the Senator Omo-Agege’s media aide Efe Duku. The response reads,
“As already well-known by many, the issues acted upon today by the Senate are pending before a court of competent jurisdiction and therefore, subjudice. It is the Senate’s view that the issues be withdrawn from court for an amicable resolution to hold. Until a resolution is reached, it is better to respect the court processes by not commenting on them. Also, we note that as part of the resolution of the issues, the Senate President, Distinguished Senator Bukola Saraki ruled that the Parliamentary Support Group, PSG, (Senate) for President Muhammadu Buhari should be disbanded. This should be a matter for the over 50 members of PSG to decide, possibly with President Buhari on whose behalf they openly work as Distinguished Senators of the Federal Republic. In the circumstance, we appeal for calm and assure that as a fervent believer in the rule of law, our Senator is in positive spirit. He remains an ardent supporter of Mr. President’s agenda for a better nation for all and will continue to work assiduously for his re-election.”
