Indonesian Teacher Jailed And Fined $34,000 After Exposing Philandering Boss

An Indonesian teacher, Baiq Nuril Maknun, who exposed her cheating boss, the Principal of the school where she worked, has been sentenced to six months in jail and fined Rp 500 million ($34,000) for keeping record of the sexual harassment she suffered from her boss. Baiq recorded a phone conversation with her former boss to protect herself from his unwanted sexual advances. In response, the principal fired Maknun and filed a complaint with the authorities.
The Supreme Court in Indonesian last week found Maknun guilty of defaming her alleged harasser after the recording was leaked to the public. The court sentenced Maknun to six months imprisonment and fined Rp 500 million ($34,000) for “violating decency” under Article 27 of the Electronic Information and Transactions Law, overturning the verdict of a local court in Lombok, which had initially cleared Maknun of the charges by a local court in Lombok.

The 36-year-old teacher told reporters that the ruling was unfair. “I’m just a victim – what did I do wrong?” she said. While her husband, Lalu Muhamad Isnaini in reaction to the ruling said “I’m saddened and shocked by this sentence.” Indonesia’s corruption-riddled justice system has long been criticised for the quality of its rulings, while the electronic information law itself has come under fire for being too vague and open to misuse.
