Health Workers Begin Nationwide Strike

An indefinite strike by Federal health workers under the aegis of the Joint Health Sector Unions is set to begin today Tuesday, April 17th, wo18. The workers are embarking on the strike due to Federal Government’s failure to implement the agreement reached with health workers last year. In a statement signed by the union’s National Chairman, Biobelemoye Josiah; and its National Secretary, Florence Ekpebor, on Monday, it said that the FG has refused to keep to their words, recalling that a nationwide strike was called off back on September 30, 2017, after both parties signed a memorandum of terms of settlement slated to be implemented within five weeks after the strike was called off. The union also noted that they demanded an upward review of the ”Consolidated Health Salary Structure, employment of additional health workers, the implementation of court judgments and the upward review of the retirement age from 60 to 65.”  They stated that they also continued to remind the FG of its promise even giving them a 30-day ultimatum which will lapse on Tuesday (today) adding that the FG does not take health workers seriously, hence the strike.  Photo Credit: Getty
