Breast cancer and you is a topic everybody has heard several times, especially over the past few days. I’m just here doing my part to raise awareness by sorting through the multitude of false information out there.

MYTH 1 – It is entirely genetic

Don’t get me wrong, genetic components play a large role in the risk factors for most cancers however, it is not the only risk factor. A simple walk once a day reduces your level of risk by a great deal. I cannot over emphasize the importance of a healthy lifestyle. This includes a healthy diet, good sleep habits, exercise, even meditation. Just because your mom had it doesn’t mean you must have it too.

MYTH 2 – All lumps are cancerous.

You’re doing your exams and you find a lump. First things first, calm down. Not all lumps are cancerous, some are benign. I am not saying don’t go for your check-ups, just that with all things being equal, the chances are 50/50.

MYTH 3 – Mammograms give you breast cancer.

Mammograms have such low radiations that your annual exams won’t make much of a difference if any. X-Rays are the ones that should make you really be scared. This idea is as ridculous as people who think abortions cause breast cancer. No, just no.

MTYH 4 – The over inflated importance of breast exams.

I know this is probably an unpopular opinion but the truth is that if there’s a bump in your breast, you’ll feel it just rolling in bed. Any discharge from your breast or change whatsoever will probably worry anybody. What people need to know are the symptoms and changes that happen when you have breast cancer. I’m not saying stop your monthly examinations. I’m just saying thet what you will find doing the exam, you can probably also find while having your bath.

I don’t mean to be politically incorrect but let’s be factual here, most people simply upload pictures on social media. They are either wearing a pink ribbon or its just a picture of the ribbon. How does this help, I ask? All those walks against cancer, what is their function? Find one person tomorrow, just one and talk to them about this thing. I am tired of social media awareness that passes no real information other than the fact that the disease exists.Breast Cancer And You koko tv ng 8Photo Credit: Getty
